Marguerita Street traffic management and road safety improvements

Consultation has concluded

4 May 2021 - Update

Following public consultation in 2020, the decision was made by elected members to construct minor safety features along Marguerita Street as a way to improve safety for pedestrians, people using mobility devices, motorists, residents and businesses, while keeping the flow of traffic along the corridor unobstructed.

These safety features included:

  • A pedestrian crossing.
  • Kerb build outs constructed within the road shoulder to allow residents to exit their driveways safely without affecting the flow of traffic.
  • Additional ‘slow zone’ marking on the road at either end of the residential area.

In addition, improvements were made to the existing bus stops.

Rotorua Lakes Council is consulting the community to better understand how people use Marguerita Street.

As part of its role in managing the local road network, Council continuously monitors traffic load, types, behaviours, and the impacts on surrounding neighbourhoods. Following recent land development and feedback from residents regarding the mixed traffic use of Marguerita Street, it is now the appropriate time to review the road use and function.

To make an informed decision about the street’s future, elected members have approved a period of consultation. This will enable Council to have a better understanding of the views of residents, businesses and other users of that neighbourhood.

Feedback will be collated and provided in a report for consideration by elected members ahead of any final decisions being made.

Three proposed options:

  1. Status quo – keep the road as it is. Council would continue to monitor and enforce parking issues.

  2. Installing traffic management features to reduce traffic speed, volume of traffic and vehicle movements e.g. chicanes or narrowing the road at the residential end of Marguerita Street.

  3. Remove the ability to travel through Marguerita Street. This would mean closing the road by installing back-to-back cul-de-sacs at a midway point (approximately the location of Vetora).

Council now wants to know which option is most preferable to the community. A list of FAQ's are on the right of your screen or can be downloaded here.
