Transcript - 'Your Choice - 2022 Representation Review' - The structure of Council is up for consideration

The ‘Your Choice – 2022 Representation Review’ will decide the structure and membership of Council for the 2022 and 2025 local elections.

We have to review the structure at least once every six years, and now is that time.

The review will consider:

• The number of councillors we have
• How councillors are elected – either by a ward system, at large, or through a mixed model • The boundaries of wards (if we have them)
• The number of councillors per ward
• And whether we should have Community Boards. Before the review began, a couple of decisions were already made.

We decided the electoral system – (the way votes are counted) - will remain as First Past the Post. This means the highest polling top 10 candidates for councillor will get a seat on Council, and the highest polling person for the Mayor’s position, will become Mayor.

And, in May this year we decided to introduce a Māori ward.

These things are not being reconsidered.

However, our proposal for the structure and membership of Council is up for consideration.

Consultation on this proposal is now open. Visit https://letstalk.rotorualakescouncil.... for more information and to have your say.

Māu e whiriwhiri, it’s your choice.
