Rotorua's Future Challenges

Planning for and progressing towards the district’s Vision 2030 presents challenges for our district. Some challenges come about because of growth and economic success, while others will require intervention to address social issues.

Ahead of the local body elections, this year’s Pre-election Report identified four main challenges for Rotorua and Council will have a key role in addressing these:

  • Housing
  • The next steps for inner city revitalisation and safety
  • Resilience to and adapting to climate change
  • Reintroduction of the four wellbeings (social, cultural, environmental, economic) into the purpose of local government

We want everyone’s views, ideas and thoughts around these challenges to assist future decision-making.

The aim is to gather a wide range of views from the community. These views will be shared with the newly elected members following October’s local body elections, to help them with their decision-making going forward.

We would love to hear your thoughts on the challenges and how council should respond!

  1. Take a look at the information and fact sheets on the 4 challenges
  2. Get involved in the discussion and provide feedback

Central government reintroduced wellbeings to the Local Government Act in May 2019 as part of its new approach to improving New Zealanders’ quality of life and living standards. Promotion of the four well-beings; social, economic, environmental and cultural, is again part of local government’s purpose.

How should we respond as a district and council to delivering on the Wellbeings?

    • How much resources should Council be dedicating to the wellbeings?
