Rotorua Lakes Council has developed these resources to help schools deliver engaging activities designed to encourage students' understanding and enthusiasm for participating in their community and the consultation process.

All units are aligned with the vision, principles, values and key competencies of Levels 2 and 3 the New Zealand Curriculum and link to the social sciences learning area.

The material is flexible for different levels. You are encouraged to adapt the sequence of learning activities to meet the specific needs and experiences of your students.

  • Kids Photo Competition

    The kids’ photo competition is designed to raise awareness among young people about Rotorua’s strengths and opportunities. Building first-hand experience of active participation by young people increases their personal understanding, belief and confidence in community participation. The winner of the classroom category will win a day out for the whole class to the Redwoods Treewalk and the Rotorua Aquatic Centre.

    To enter a teacher will need to register for Let’s Talk | Kōrero Mai and submit the photo on the classes behalf.

  • Teaching units aligned to Levels 2 and 3 of the New Zealand Curriculum

    The aim of this resource is to encourage students to have their say on the decisions that affect their lives now and in the future. The resource supports students to learn about their rights, duties, and responsibilities in a democracy and to develop understandings of how they can influence what happens in their community.


    Teaching Units Levels 2-3

    Curriculum Links: Social Sciences (Social Studies)

    Identity, Culture and Organisation

    Students learn about society and communities and how they function. They also learn about the diverse cultures and identities of people within those communities and about the effects on the participation of groups and individuals.

    Level 2 achievement objectives

    Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to:

    • Understand that people have social, cultural, and economic roles, rights, and responsibilities.
    • Understand how people make significant contributions to New Zealand’s society.
    Level 3 achievement objectives

    Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to:

    • Understand how groups make and implement rules and laws.
    • Understand how people view and use places differently.
