Proposed Return of 35 Tarewa Road Pūruru Reserve South

If you indicated that you wish to speak at a hearing you will have been contacted with the details. Hearings are scheduled to take place on Monday 25th November.

Pūruru Reserve South

The Rotorua Lakes Council owns an area of land at 35 Tarewa Road which is commonly known as Pūruru South Reserve. The land was originally gifted to the Council by Mr. Pat Ruhi (Ngāti Kearoa Ngāti Tūara) in 1964 for a reserve and a playground.

In 2022 a decision was made to remove the playground following consultation with the community and neighbouring residents. The basis of the decision was that the condition of the playground had declined due to age and as a result it was becoming unsafe. There are also other public and private play areas and reserves nearby.

As the land is no longer being used for the purpose that it was gifted, the Council is proposing to classify the land to a Māori reservation and vest it in trustees representing the people of Taharangi Marae. Council is now seeking feedback on this proposal, subject to Section 138 Local Government Act 2002.
